Grindhouse Part 2: Planet Terror
April 4th 2008 04:10
This is even longer overdue.
My non existent reader base might not want to know that I've been out for the count this past week with an unfortunate heavy dose of the flu and its only now that I'm feeling well enough to do anything worthwhile that didn't involve reading Bret Easton Ellis novels (The Rules of Attraction), watching decent reality TV (Chopping Block anyone?) and listening to Japanese black metal (Gallhammer). But, onto more important (read: relevant) things.
Part two of the Grindhouse review: Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror.
I had no idea what to expect with this film after seeing Death Proof. It is about the release of Project Terror, a gas that infects people turning them into flesh eating zombies out to kill everyone. A small band of survivors - Cherry (a delicious Rose McGowan), her ex-boyfriend Wray (Freddy Rodriguez) amongst a huge all star cast including Bruce Willis, Naveen Andrews and Josh Brolin - fight against the disease in various forms.
There isn't much to this film so I don't want to give anything away except to say that it is much better than Death Proof (although I did quite enjoy it, see review) and Josh Brolin absolutely destroys as Dr. Block. He is so much cooler with a moustache and the funniest bastard in a while. McGowan is pure tits and ass but that's all that's required of her. The final scene when she obtains the machine gun leg is fucking hilarious and its so corny that its quite possibly the best idea ever.
Quentin Tarantino insists on getting his ugly mug on the screen and has a small role as an Army officer out for sex in this flick. The question begs - is anyone as bad an actor as him? Great writer/director, can't act for shit.
Anyway, this review was an incredibly lazy effort due to my drug induced state so I promise my next one will be better. I should do coke instead of Herron tablets, that could make things interesting.
6/10
