I Have No Life (Or: I Just Completed A Friends Marathon)
March 25th 2008 00:40
So I've got the 'no life' part out of the way, the cat calls can stop.
I've got an admission to make - I never watched Friends during its initial heyday premier run. Sitcoms weren't considered 'cool' amongst my loser clique at the time (which funnily enough didn't include any girls either ... oh that's right). Mind you I was a Seinfeld devotee so go figure.
My housemate suggested I give the program a try after seeing re-runs on TV. "I have nothing better to do" I reasoned so I gave it a shot. Season 1 DVD in the player I started my personal marathon to watch a show I was completely out of sync with the world about and three months later it was completed when I finally had a long overdue shower and brushed forty packets of corn chips off my lap and saw some sun (burns like a mother).
Initial reactions? Ross is a complete utter PUSSY. He is devoid of testicles and in reality he would have no shot with Rachel until she was 35 and she realised she had zero options in terms of a boyfriend (which I guess explains the series finale, but seriously as if you'd ditch Paris for a black haired douche who stalked you during school?). Phoebe is something different altogether. It wasn't until season six or so when she actually became useful - before then she was the weird friend who stuck around your group and you let them because you felt sorry for them until you couldn't put up with their weirdness anymore and you gradually forced them out. That's what I was hoping for until she became useful. Not that I didn't stop praying for her forced removal, just daily instead of hourly.
Rachel is the girl who you thought you had a shot with but ended up becoming friends with ala the Ross debacle that made up an ENTIRE SERIES. The biggest thing I noticed about this show was the early seasons featured some of the worst wardrobe choices ever seen but as the series progressed, so did their fashion sense and haircuts. You're probably thinking 'who the hell cares about someone's haircut? Their lines are what is important.' Well, I do, and when you're watching the same six douches for roughly 5280 minutes it helps if they learn a few things on the way. Monica offered very little along the way apart from being a joke source for Ross and ... well ... that's about it. Joey was along the same lines as Phoebe in terms of having nothing to offer (and never really did) but at least his lines were actually humorous at times. Plus he was pathetic so it made it all the more funny.
Chandler was the surprise package. I can't take Matthew Perry seriously in anything outside of this show but here he was in his element as the guy most guys could probably relate to i.e. finding any possible chance to be annoying and reveling in said hilarity.
As for my favourite episode? That would have to be the one where Ross and Chandler battle Monica and Rachel in a personal knowledge game about each other for their apartment. Tight writing that actually kept you engaged the entire episode. Too bad we all missed out on the minute long kiss between Monica and Rachel. That would have been Emmy worthy.
