Shoot 'Em Up (2007): Mindless Fun
October 27th 2008 05:31
Shoot 'Em Up (2007) is a no holds barred dark action-packed, mindless-but-well-worth-the-f un comedy.
In other words, you pretty much get what you asked for – guns blaring incessantly, outrageous near misses and funky one liners.
Starring Clive Owen in the title role, who hits the mark with his wry sense of humour, but is overshadowed by the film's plot, which is simplistically retarded - but all in good fun. In a nutshell, it goes something like this…in the middle of the night, while waiting for a bus Mr. Smith (Clive Owen), who has a perchance for the odd carrot (for night vision and weaponry, no doubt), sees a pregnant woman being chased by a man with a gun. He follows the couple, kills the man and helps the delivery of the baby all in the middle of a shootout. The woman is killed but Smith saves the baby, escaping from Hertz (Paul Giamatti), the leader of the killers. Then he meets the prostitute Donna Quintano (the distractingly stunning Monica Belluci), who has just lost her baby, and asks her, to breastfeed the newborn (as you do). The chase and romance ensues, in which Smith finds himself embroiled in a complex political conspiracy…..which is ridiculous! But you keep watching….
And here’s why:- the mindless, highly stylized, darkly comedic action. Its like cheap sweet chocolate, good enough to eat ‘cos its in front of you, and in need of the eating…
Brainchild of UK filmmaker and Writer/Director Michael Davies (Monster Man), the film employed a guerilla marketing campaign which included a viral video and website selling bogus items ranging from bullet-proof strollers to riot helmets for infants….the campaign took a sour turn when a prank-video was released on YouTube claiming to test the bullet-proof stroller by shooting at it with a submachinegun while a baby was in it...goes without saying that, yes, some thought it was real!
Its no doubt the film received varying reviews when it was released; some likening it to pure drivel, others the perfect sanctuary for action junkies. After a poor run in US theatres, it had a limited release in Australia and went to DVD in less than 3 weeks, this January.
Shoot 'Em Up doesn’t disappoint if you’re looking for a cheap thrill. And cheap is the operative word.
Enjoy!
p.s...If you cant get through the first few scenes, fast forward to the awkwardly hilarious sex-scene with Clive and Monica - its worth watching and includes a one-liner from Clive that is just cringe-worthy!
